Golf di Cortina d'Ampezzo
Italy

Design an 18-hole golf course with driving range in the most "chique" winter resort of Italy and site of the 1956 Winter Olympics. The site and panorama are absolutely magnificent. Extremely detailed drawings demanded by environmentalists and ecologists were submitted to the authorities in order to obtain the building permits. Construction started in May 2008.

Silvio Bernardi is a co-designer of this project due to his special relationship with the land owners and his extensive knowledge of the site and the many local environmental and ecological constraints that had to be determined and negotiated at every step of the design process. In fact, the complicated nature of this project has obliged us to increase the team to include: Paolo Luongo, Iñaki de la Cuadra and Stefano Reniero who are aided by our expert IT Specialist Ranjit Jesuraj.

Frequent and daily thunderstorms are delaying progress although most of the course will be sown by the 15th July 2009. This course is generating great interest but the players will have to wait a little while to taste this new and spectacular mountain course.

Peter Harradine visited cortina on the 19th May 2009 to inspect the works. The very long winter (6.7 meters of snow!) has delayed the works although the 9 holes should still be completed by the end of July. The grass sown last autumn has suffered slightly but will recuperate quickly.

A meeting was held recently in Dubai between the Cortina Golf Club represented by Mr. Giovanni de Bona, Mr. Silvio Bernardi, Mr. Sergio Vellar and Stefano Reniero and Harradine Golf represented by Paolo Luongo and Peter Harradine.

The meeting was held to thrash out the final routing of the second nine holes. Dubai was chosen as the venue as it was the most convenient location for all parties concerned especially as Peter could not travel to Europe during that period due to other important commitments.

The reason for the impromptu meeting was the sudden urgency demonstrated by the authorities to review the latest plan seeing as the initial routing was subject to heated arguments and negotiations between the client, the authorities and Harradine Golf.

The Dubai session actually produced a very good compromise which included two par 5’s, and some absolutely astonishing holes that all qualify for that overrated “signature” definition.

Furthermore, the unique and magnificent Dolomites produce an incredible back-drop to those new holes.

13 May 2008: The works at the Cortina Golf Course finally started

The ground-breaking ceremony included important guests such as: Giorgio Carriero, the president of Golf Cortina, Luigi Pompanin Dimai, the president of Cortina SRL, Paolo Luongo, the Harradine Golf representative, Sergio Vellar, the Harradine Golf supervisor and Stefano Reniero, the project manager.

Tough and protracted negotiations with the environmentalists and ecologists finally allowed the project to go ahead! The environmentalists were absent at the ground breaking ceremony because they finally recognized the ecological sustainability and the positive nature of the project, especially as their concerns were solved by various compromises on the detailed designs and specified construction methodology.

Phase 1 consists of the first 9 holes. The second 9 holes have been designed and the usual procedures for the building permits have been submitted.

This course will be an unforgettable summer attraction for all golfers and tourists alike as the site, layout and panorama are absolutely magnificent.

Cortina Inaugurato il cantiere, ambientalisti assenti.

«Progetto sostenibile»
